transformation n : the act or process of transforming: a complete change
Picture this: a teacher fairly new to the education world, charged with the daunting task of preparing fourth grade students for the state writing assessment. This teacher had very little writing training and preparation in her college education courses. She was overwhelmed, confused, and helpless. What did this teacher do? She turned to the University of Mississippi Writing Project for guidance, support, and what she needed the most: answers.
Three years ago, I was this teacher. After attending SI, my teaching did a total transformation. I finally had the confidence, tools, and information that I needed to successfully prepare my students to be strong, confident writers. I had a new attitude when it came to the state writing assessment... BRING IT ON! If I had to describe this experience in one word, I would choose the word transformation.
Earlier this month, my students took the 4th grade writing assessment. I can't wait to see their scores. I know that the scores will make me proud of my students. As a National Writing Project teacher, I enjoy telling my writing success stories from my classroom. In fact, I had a student recently tell me “Mrs. Naron, I finally get it! I understand the writing process now. I love sharing my stories with the class.” I can’t think of a more rewarding moment in my teaching career, and I love hearing their voices shine through in the stories that they continue to write and share.
My story is not the only story like this. The National Writing Project reaches close to 100,000 teachers a year. I am sure that these teachers also have writing success stories.
Let's make sure that other teachers have a transformation story to tell of their own.
